Valley of Fire State Park

Nevada's oldest state park — 40,000 acres of otherworldly red sandstone, 2,000-year-old petroglyphs, and easy family hikes about an hour from Las Vegas.

Valley of Fire looks like another planet — the kind of place that makes kids go completely silent the moment they spot the blazing red rock formations stretching to the horizon. Nevada's oldest state park (established 1935) spans 40,000 acres of Jurassic-era Aztec sandstone, ancient petrified trees, and petroglyphs carved by the Basketmaker people 2,500 years ago.

The park has trails for all levels, with shorter loops perfect for families with young children. Stop at the Visitor Center first — rangers are great at pointing you toward the right hike. The park is open 365 days a year and closes at sunset. Note: many trails close May 15–September 30 due to extreme heat and safety concerns.

Pro Tips

Stop at the Visitor Center before hiking — rangers will match you to the right trail for your kids' ages. The White Domes Loop is a family favorite (1.2 miles). Bring more water than you think you need.

Best Time to Visit

October through April — mild temps and stunning light on the red rocks. Many trails close May–September due to heat.
