Desert Heat Safety — Read Before You Go

Las Vegas parks are wonderful year-round — but summer (June through September) requires planning. The valley regularly hits 110°F and metal playground equipment becomes genuinely dangerous by 10am.

  • Go early or go late. Before 9am or after 5pm are the only safe windows for outdoor play in peak summer. The equipment cools down quickly once the sun drops.
  • Bring more water than you think you need. One bottle per person is not enough in 105°F. Bring a full reusable water bottle per person plus a backup.
  • Test the slide before letting kids ride. Metal slides can cause burns. Use the back of your wrist — if it hurts, skip it.
  • October through April is the golden season. Perfect weather, uncrowded parks, and no heat stress. These months are when valley families live at the park.

Northwest

FreeNorthwest Las VegasAll ages — best for ages 3 and up

Lone Mountain Regional Park

9825 W Lone Mountain Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89129

A 120-acre regional park built around the rugged flanks of Lone Mountain. The park's two distinct zones make it feel like two parks in one: an active sports and playground area at the base, and a natural desert discovery section higher up with interpretive trails, a log play area, and a horse-themed play zone that kids find genuinely exciting. Trails throughout offer sweeping views of the surrounding desert and the city skyline.

What's Here

  • Desert discovery education area with interpretive signs
  • Log and horse-themed natural play areas
  • Multiple playgrounds for different age ranges
  • Sports courts: basketball, tennis, volleyball
  • Paved and natural surface hiking trails
  • Panoramic views of the Las Vegas Valley

Best Time to Visit

Before 9am in summer · Anytime October through April

Insider Tip

Take the upper trail all the way to the discovery education area — most families stop at the playground below and miss it entirely. The natural play structures up top are wilder and more interesting than the standard playground equipment.

FreeSummerlin WestBest for ages 4–12, zip lines suit older kids

Fox Hill Park

231 Antelope Ridge Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89138

One of the most ambitious public playgrounds in Las Vegas. Opened in 2018, this 18-acre Summerlin park is built into the hillside and features two legitimate zip lines, climbing towers made of rope and steel, concrete slides, saucer swings, a "hamster wheel," and panoramic views of the Las Vegas Valley from the upper section. The terrain itself is part of the play — the park is not flat, and that's exactly the point.

What's Here

  • Two full-length public zip lines
  • Rope tower climbing structures
  • Two large concrete slides built into the hillside
  • Disc golf course across the park
  • Panoramic Strip and valley views from the upper area
  • Walking trails connecting playground sections

Best Time to Visit

Before 9am in summer · Evening in shoulder seasons · All day October through March

Insider Tip

The concrete slides require a cloth sack to slide smoothly — bring a scrap of cardboard or a reusable shopping bag. Without it, kids slow to a crawl. With it, the speed genuinely surprises them.

North Las Vegas

FreeCraig Ranch, North Las VegasAll ages — skate park best for ages 8 and up

Craig Ranch Regional Park

628 W Craig Rd, North Las Vegas, NV 89032

At 170 acres, Craig Ranch is North Las Vegas's flagship park and one of the largest in the valley. The 65,000-square-foot skate park is the park's biggest draw — one of the best in Nevada, with street sections, a bowl, and competition-grade features. Alongside the skate park: three dog parks, two lighted competition baseball fields, community garden plots, and extensive sports courts. Families with kids who love wheels (boards, bikes, scooters) will find this park hard to top.

What's Here

  • 65,000 sq ft skate park — one of the largest in Nevada
  • Three separate dog parks (small, medium, large dogs)
  • Two lighted competition baseball fields
  • Community garden with 62 personal plots
  • Basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts
  • Playgrounds and open grass areas

Best Time to Visit

The skate park closes Wednesdays until noon for maintenance. Plan around that if it's the main reason you're going — check the City of North Las Vegas website for the most current skate park hours.

FreeAliante, North Las VegasAll ages — exceptional for toddlers through age 10

Aliante Nature Discovery Park

2627 Nature Park Dr, North Las Vegas, NV 89084

The centerpiece of the Aliante master-planned community, this park is a genuine standout in the North Las Vegas park system. A large man-made lake with a waterfall serves as the focal point, surrounded by paved walking paths and open lawn. The dinosaur-themed nature discovery area is a hit with young kids — interpretive signs explain the prehistoric connection to the region. A multi-story playground structure, splash pad, amphitheater, and sports courts round it out.

What's Here

  • Man-made lake with waterfall — great for walking laps
  • Dinosaur-themed nature discovery area with educational signs
  • Multi-story playground structure
  • Splash pad (seasonal — typically Memorial Day through Labor Day)
  • Tennis, volleyball, and bocce ball courts

Best Time to Visit

Before 9am in summer · All day October through April

The lake loop is just under a mile and stroller-friendly all the way around. The waterfall area is the best spot to stop for photos — the angle from the north side of the lake gives you the waterfall and the mountains in one shot.

Central & West Las Vegas

FreeCentral West Las VegasAll ages — calm atmosphere suits all generations

Lorenzi Park

3333 W Washington Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89107

Lorenzi Park is the kind of older, established park that gets overlooked in favor of newer facilities — which means it's almost always uncrowded. Over 60 acres of mature landscaping, three ponds with ducks, shaded walking paths, and a calm atmosphere that feels more like a city park in the traditional sense. The Nevada State Museum is located inside the park and adds an educational stop when the little ones need a break from running. A neighborhood gem hiding in plain sight.

What's Here

  • Three ponds with ducks — bring bread
  • Shaded walking and jogging paths under mature trees
  • Playground and open grass areas
  • Tennis courts
  • Dog area
  • Nevada State Museum on site (separate admission)

Best Time to Visit

Before 9am in summer · Anytime October through April

Insider Tip

This is one of the shadiest parks in the valley thanks to the mature trees — a rare commodity. On a hot day when you need to be outside but can't take full sun, Lorenzi is genuinely more comfortable than newer parks with open exposed playgrounds.

Desert Breeze Park

8275 W Spring Mountain Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89117

A 240-acre regional park anchored by the Desert Breeze Community Center, which adds an indoor pool and water play area to an already robust outdoor facility. The park stretches across open desert-adjacent land with soccer fields, a skate park, extensive playground areas, and an RC car track — one of the few public RC tracks in the valley. The scale of the park means it rarely feels crowded even on weekends. Good for families who want options.

  • RC car racing track
  • Soccer fields and open sports areas
  • Skate park
  • Playground structures

Southwest & Mountain's Edge

FreeMountain's Edge, Southwest Las VegasAges 4 and up for the playground · Ages 6+ for the summit trail

Exploration Peak Park

9275 S Buffalo Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89178

Built around the 2,846-foot summit of Exploration Peak, this 80-acre park has two distinct personalities. At the base: a large western-themed playground with covered structures, picnic areas, and restrooms. Above it: a well-maintained trail that switchbacks up to the summit, where you get panoramic views of the Las Vegas Strip, Mountain's Edge community, and the Spring Mountains. The climb is accessible to older kids and takes about 30–45 minutes round trip.

What's Here

  • Summit trail to Exploration Peak (2,846 feet) with valley views
  • Western-themed playground at the base
  • Covered picnic shelters
  • Bike and walking trails
  • Views of the Las Vegas Strip from the summit

The summit hike is exposed with zero shade — start before 7:30am in summer or save it for October through April. On clear winter mornings, the Strip view from the top is dramatic. Bring extra water — the climb is short but dry.

Henderson

FreeSoutheast HendersonAll ages — especially good for toddlers and young children

Cornerstone Park

1600 Wigwam Pkwy, Henderson, NV 89074

Cornerstone Park is Henderson's most scenic family park — a 31-acre lake forms the centerpiece, surrounded by flat paved walking trails that loop the entire perimeter. Ducks and geese are permanent residents, and feeding them is a family ritual here. Large pavilions and covered picnic shelters are reservable for events. Playground equipment, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and exercise stairs add activity options beyond the lake loop. Consistently well-maintained and rarely overcrowded.

  • 31-acre lake with walking trails around the perimeter
  • Resident ducks and geese to feed

Paseo Vista Park

2505 Paseo Verde Pkwy, Henderson, NV 89052

A compact, thoughtfully designed park in Henderson's Anthem area that packs a lot into 8 acres. Covered picnic shelters, a splash pad, separate playground areas for different ages, basketball and bocce courts, a dog park, and a horseshoe pit. The covered shelters provide the shade most parks lack, making it more comfortable in shoulder-season heat. Clean restrooms, water fountains throughout, and consistent maintenance make this a reliable neighborhood park that families return to.

What's Here

  • Splash pad (seasonal)
  • Covered picnic shelters — one of the shadiest parks in Henderson

Southeast Las Vegas

FreeParadise / Southeast Las Vegas ValleyAll ages — something for everyone in the family

Sunset Park

2601 E Sunset Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89120

The original Las Vegas family park. At 324 acres, Sunset is the largest and most complete park in the Clark County system — established in 1967 and still the benchmark everything else is measured against. The 8-acre lake is the emotional center: ducks, fishermen, morning walkers, and kids throwing bread from the shore. Basketball courts, tennis courts, volleyball, model airplane areas, an RC car track, playgrounds, and miles of paths keep the whole family occupied for a full afternoon. This is where Las Vegas families have been coming for two generations.

What's Here

  • 8-acre lake with ducks, geese, and year-round fishing
  • Multiple large playground structures
  • Basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts
  • Model airplane flying area (separate designated zone)
  • RC car track
  • Extensive paved and dirt walking paths
  • Reservable ramadas and picnic areas throughout
  • Dog park area

Best Time to Visit

Before 9am or after 5pm in summer · All day October through April

Insider Tip

The east side of the lake near the far parking lot is the least crowded section — the central playground area gets packed on weekends. The model airplane area is a surprise hit with kids who've never seen it: locals fly elaborate aircraft on Sunday mornings and most are happy to talk to curious families.
