Lake Mead National Recreation Area
America's first national recreation area — just 30 minutes from Las Vegas. Boulder Beach swimming, boating, hiking, and camping along the Colorado River.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area is the kind of place Las Vegas families take for granted until they have out-of-town guests and suddenly realize: we have a national park basically in our backyard. The recreation area stretches across 1.5 million acres along the Colorado River, with Lake Mead at its heart.
Boulder Beach is the go-to for families — a rocky-but-swimmable beach where the water tops 80°F by late summer. There's also boating, kayaking, hiking along the River Mountains Loop Trail, and year-round fishing. The park charges a vehicle entry fee; annual passes are available. Note: the park is cashless — cards only at all entrance stations.
Pro Tips
Wear water shoes at Boulder Beach — it's rocky. The America the Beautiful annual pass ($80) covers entry to all national parks and pays for itself after a few visits. Hemenway Harbor nearby has boat rentals and a marina snack bar.
Best Time to Visit
May–September for swimming. Fall and spring for hiking. Avoid peak summer midday heat.
