Hoover Dam
One of the great American engineering wonders — walk across the top, tour the power plant, and take in massive views of Lake Mead. 30 minutes from Las Vegas.
One of the most iconic engineering marvels in American history, Hoover Dam sits on the Nevada-Arizona border about 30 minutes from Las Vegas. Families can walk across the top of the dam for free, take the self-guided Visitor Center tour, or book the Power Plant Tour to go inside the dam and see the massive generators. The Visitor Center has exhibits on the construction history, a theater, and an observation deck with stunning views of Lake Mead and the Colorado River. Kids love the scale of everything — the dam stands 726 feet tall. Note: The guided Dam Tour ($40) is not available for kids under 8, but the Power Plant Tour (ages 4+) and Visitor Center are family-friendly. Walk across the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge for an incredible aerial view of the dam — it is free and accessible from the parking area.
Pro Tips
Park at the Arizona parking garage ($10) for closest access. Walk the O'Callaghan-Tillman Memorial Bridge for free and get a spectacular aerial view — great photo spot. Skip the Guided Dam Tour with young kids (ages 8+ required) and do the Power Plant Tour instead. Combine with Hemenway Park (bighorn sheep, 15 min away in Boulder City) for a full day.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning (before 10 AM) to avoid heat and crowds. Spring and fall are ideal. Summer mornings still manageable.
